Demetris Koilalous was born in Athens in 1962.

Between 1980 and 1989 he was based in the UK where he studied ‘Urban and Regional Planning’ in Edinburgh and ‘Geography’ in London.

He took up photography in 1982 and attended photography seminars between 1982 and 1987, in Edinburgh College of Art.

He returned to Greece in 1990 and since that time he has been working as a freelance photographer, specializing in portrait, theatre and advertising photography. He has worked with most advertising companies in Greece for national and international campaigns, as well as with many public and private organizations (such as ‘the National Theatre of Greece’, ‘the National Theatre of Northern Greece’, ‘Regional’ and ‘Municipal’ theatres of Greece, the ‘Municipality of the city of Athens’, the three major Greek political parties for their national campaigns between 1998 and 2006, the ‘Olympic Games Committee’, the ‘National Bank of Greece’, the ‘Ionian Bank’, the ‘Benaki Museum’, the ‘National Tourist Organization’, the ‘Chios Mastiha Growers Association’, etc), and his work has been published extensively in most Greek magazines and newspapers (namely ‘Mme Figaro’, Marie Claire’, ‘Votre Beauté’, ‘Playboy’, ‘Metro’, ‘E’, etc) throughout these years. During the same period he has photographed numerous theatrical plays performed by prominent organizations and artists, among which, Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal.

After 2000, his focus has shifted to the international musical industry where he has worked with numerous artists among which Loreena Mc Kennitt, Rene Aubrie, Cesaria Evora, Omara Portuondo, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Juan Carlos Caceres, Daniel Melingo, Sophie Solomon, Madeleine Peyroux, Lila Downs, Yasmin Levi and many more.

Since 2004 he has been teaching ‘history of photography’ and ‘photographic techniques’ in various private and public institutions for the Higher National Diploma, as well as at the Adult Education program of the Greek-American educational foundation, where, in 2005 he created with his students the ‘Sympligada’ photography group.

After 2004 the most important activities that he was involved in are the following:

-2004 solo exhibition “Games”, held in Chios Island, Greece; inspired by everyday life in the island of Chios and correlated with the Olympic Games of Athens 2004.

-2007 the project “The South”, presented at the Goethe Institute in Athens; focused on the life and activities of mastic growers in the southern regions of the Greek Island of Chios.

-2009 participation in the group exhibition “Earth/Tracks” at the State Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki (TMP), Greece -as part of the exhibition for the Prix Pictet awards; curation Gabriel Bauret, Vangelis Ioakimidis.

-2010 participation in group exhibition with the collection “déjà vu” at the 21st photobiennale of Thessaloniki; at the Archaeological museum of Thessaloniki; curated by D. Koilalous and the TMP.

-2011 participation in group exhibition with photographs from Lebanon at the 8th International Book Fair of Thessaloniki; curation D. Koilalous and Vangelis Ioakimidis.

-2011 assignment to photograph Lebanon, as part of a program initiated by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism and implemented by the TMP.

-2011 participation as invited speaker in conference about the notion of Topos (Place); At the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

-2012 participation in group exhibition with the “Lebanese Notebook; AntiParadise” at TMP, as part of the exhibition “Oriented and disoriented in the Middle East”; curated by Vangelis Ioakimidis.

-2012 participation in group exhibition with the “Lebanese Notebook; AntiParadise” at PHOTOMED, Toulon, France, as part of the exhibition “Trois  photographes Grecs au Moyen-Orient d’aujourd’hui”; curated by Vangelis Ioakimidis.

-2012 presentation of the “Lebanese notebook; AntiParadise” in Fotografia Europea Festival at Reggio Emilia, Italy; curator Nina Kassianou

-2012 assignment to photograph Israel as part of the same program initiated by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism and implemented by the TMP.

-2015 solo exhibition of “Lebanese notebook; AntiParadise” in Chios Photo Festival

-2015 assigned by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation to photograph sites and people for the Chios Mastic Museum

-2015 "CAESURA | the duration of a sigh" a year-long project about the transitory IDENTITY state of refugees and migrants entering Greece after crossing the Aegean Sea on their way to Europe is completed.

-2016  "CAESURA | the duration of a sigh" is exhibited in 2016 Athens Photo Festival at the Benaki Museum of Athens.

His works are found in private collections and in the collection of the MTP.
